The Kujukuri and Minamiboso areas of the Boso Peninsula had long used well water, supply of which is inherently unstable. However, with population growth and urbanization, demand for tap water has increased. Meanwhile, the Keiyō Industrial Zone, which extends from Chiba City to Kimitsu City, also needed a stable supply of industrial water.
However, the Boso peninsula did not have a sufficiently large water source to meet such demand. It was for this reason that the Boso Canal was built to transport water from the Tone River to these areas.
The canal transports water from the Tone River over a long distance of about 100 kilometers to the town of Otaki in Minamiboso, eliminating concerns about water shortages in the areas that need it and supporting the daily lives of residents.
Yokoshiba Pumping Station is the starting point of the Boso Canal. It pumps up water that has been drawn from the Tone River and conveyed along the Kuriyama River and sends it on to the pump stations further down the canal.
From 2015 to 2020, EBARA conducted a project (including the renewal of three pumps) to upgrade most of the machinery and electrical equipment without stopping the operation of the station.
