Zero flooding

Taking on the challenge with Japan’s water control technology: Can we reduce global flood damage to zero?

Protecting our way of life from the threat of flood disasters

In recent years, we often hear the word extreme weather. Japan also experiences extreme heat and heavy rain every year, and this extreme weather has caused serious weather disasters.
Among these weather disasters, floods caused by excessive rainfall are one of the disasters that has a particularly large impact on our lives. In addition to the fact that Japan is a country with annual rainfall exceeding 1700 ml (more than double the world average), when heavy rainfall occurs, its steep topography makes the country vulnerable to flooding and other disasters caused by a rapid increase in river flow.Against such flooding, we have been on a mission for many years to protect normal life from the wrath of flood disasters using drainage pump stations installed throughout Japan.

We aim to utilize the know-how in plant design, technical proposal capabilities, and product development capabilities that we have accumulated, as well as the results of our extensive experience in construction, diverse pump lineup, and engineering capabilities, to support flood countermeasures around the world.

Addressing flood disasters not only in Japan but around the world

In the world as a whole, the damage caused by flood disasters has increased partly due to the rise in temperature in recent decades. Floods not only damages houses and buildings, but also adversely affect sanitary conditions, making epidemics more likely to occur. Estimate suggests that the number of people affected by the river flooding was around 65 million globally in 2010, but it is now more than 100 million. It is projected to increase to 132 million in 2030. It is also estimated that the economic loss caused by the disruption of human activity due to flooding exceeds 500 billion dollars worldwide.

If global warming is the cause of this, we will have to face increasingly severe disasters. There are many areas in the world that have higher rainfall and are more prone to flooding than Japan. Moreover, it is not always possible to use Japanese systems as-it-is outside Japan due to different climate and water quality by region. We believe that providing more comprehensive solutions to solve these problems is essential to tackling flood disasters worldwide. EBARA aims for a future in which flood disasters can be reduced to zero, not only in Japan but also around the world.
