Grand design for the land-based aquaculture business
One-stop service
We are using a closed recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), which utilizes technologies such as fluid and thermal control that we have cultivated over many years, for ongoing feeding trials of whiteleg shrimp. We are also developing an automated breeding system using artificial intelligence. Demonstration tests on the scale of commercial production at large aquaculture farms in Japan are planned to begin in fiscal 2024. We strive to provide solutions to continuously improve and support the profitability of land-based aquaculture through the application of technologies generated from these initiatives. In the future, we plan to promote the creation of a sustainable future and the spread of land-based aquaculture by expanding EBARA's land-based aquaculture system not only to Japan, but also to the rest of the world.
In addition to product planning using land-farmed fish and sales through EC sites and pop-up stores in commercial facilities, we have continued to product samples of Ebiokowa (glutinous rice with shrimp) using our whiteleg shrimp and are marketing these products to the subscribed members of major department stores as practical marketing activities. Based on the experience we can gain through these activities, we seek to develop a support infrastructure for the establishment of a sales system for land-farmed fish.
We signed a capital and business alliance with Regional Fish Institute, Ltd., a startup from Kyoto University. We are building next-generation land-based aquaculture systems and services in the field of smart aquaculture (aquaculture environment management using ICT) and working together to maximize the value we provide by combining breed improvement technologies of the Regional Fish Institute. In recognition of these initiatives, we won the METI Minister's Award at the Award for Academic Startups 2021 and the MAFF Minister’s Award at the Japan Open Innovation Prize in 2022. In addition, we have conducted joint research with Swing Corporation, a leading water treatment company engaged in the aquarium industry. We will continue to work with companies in various fields to fulfill our goal of providing one-stop services.
