EBARA CORPORATION (EBARA) has successfully tested the performance of an in-tank pump for liquid ammonia, an anticipated source of carbon-free fuel, using LPG.
Testing of Actual Ammonia Pump
Amid the global trend toward decarbonization, Ammonia is rising as a next-generation energy source, largely due to its unique properties which do not emit CO2 during combustion. This trend is spreading particularly within the Japanese market. Following the increase in plans for the use of ammonia in power plants and large-scale receiving terminals, we have successfully developed an in-tank pump for use in dispensing and transferring liquid ammonia that can be installed in metal or PC (prestressed concrete) tanks. Performance tests were successfully carried out using LPG (-50°C), which has properties similar to ammonia (-33°C).
The in-tank pump that was tested with LPG is designed to run while fully submerged within the service fluid (Ammonia) inside the tank during actual operation. The testing was conducted at the LPG testing facility of the Elliott Group, an EBARA Group company, using pumps of a similar size to those used in commercial ammonia applications. By conducting tests in an environment closest to that of the real world applications, we were able to acquire more reliable data and verify the integrity of our product. We expect these pumps to play an essential role in the fuel ammonia supply chain and contribute to the safe and reliable transfer of liquid ammonia in fuel ammonia power generation and fuel ammonia terminals in the future.
We anticipate that the demand for leak-free pumps will grow tremendously in the near future with the multiple ammonia combustion power plants that are either underway or in planning.
We will accelerate our efforts to become carbon neutral by 2050 and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society as stated in our long-term vision E-Vision 2030.
The EBARA Group aims to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing material issues identified in its long-term vision and executing the medium-term management plan to increase corporate value.
